Hair loss affects both men and women, with over 50% of women and 70% of men experiencing thinning hair at some point in their lives. Many are happy to live with hair loss, but if you aren’t yet ready to give up your tresses, modern medicine gives you a choice. To restore your hair, consider:

Harbingers of Hair Loss

The first step in reversing hair loss is to figure out why it’s happening. Some of the most common sources include:

  • Androgenic Alopecia  Also known as “male pattern baldness,” this condition affects most men by age 50 as well as a large number of women. In men, the frontal hair line recedes while hair on the crown becomes thinner. In women, only the hair at the top of their head thins.
  • Alopecia Areata  This is an auto-immune disorder in which the immune system attacks your body’s hair follicles, causing hair to fall out in patches. It is most common in young adults and teenagers, and can cause hair to fall out all over the body. In rare cases, it leads to total baldness.
  • Telogen Effluvium  Whereas most hair loss conditions lead to bald patches, this condition causes hair to thin without disappearing from any particular area. It is usually the result of hormonal changes, stress, illness, and diet changes.
  • Seborrhoeic Dermatitis  This is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the scalp. It causes thinning hair as well as dandruff, greasy or scaly skin, and itching.

Resources for Restoration

Depending on the reason for your hair loss, restoration will involve either treating the condition that leads to hair loss or transplanting new hair onto the scalp. The most common procedures include:

  • Anti-Fungal Medications  Seborrhoeic dermatitis patients can cure their condition and reverse their hair loss with anti-fungal drugs, which they can either take in pill form or apply to their heads through creams, gels, and shampoos.
  • Immune System Suppressants  Alopecia areata patients apply immune-suppressing creams or ointments to the parts of their scalps affected by hair loss to stop their immune systems from attacking the hair follicles there.
  • Hair Growth Drugs  Medicines such as minoxidil and finasteride stimulate hair cell growth, reversing the tide of a thinning scalp. These methods are not always effective, however, and only work as long as the patient takes the drugs regularly.
  • Hair Transplants  This method involves surgically removing hair from one part of the patient’s body and transferring it to another part. This is the quickest procedure to restore head and eyebrow hair.
