Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT transplant) is the most common method of surgical hair restoration.
When done correctly, FUT hair transplant can provide a permanent & natural solution to hair loss.
This procedure is ideal for those who suffer from male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) and need help covering a receding hairline. This type of hair loss is commonly noted along the temples or an M-shaped pattern along the hairline.
About FUT Hair Transplants
Hair transplantation is a cosmetic procedure that transfers hairs & hair follicles from the back / sides of the head into the balding parts of the scalp.
FUT transplants work best for people with high hair follicle density, and/or those with more advanced hair loss.
Planning for the Procedure
Dr. Frank’s approach to hair transplant begins with a consultation. He will analyze your age, hair loss patterns, hair thickness, and other factors to determine whether you may be a good candidate for an FUT transplant.
Applying his facial plastic & skull base surgery experience, Dr. Frank then works with our clients to help create a custom plan for hair placement.
Most clients still have plenty of native hairs that can serve as an outline, but for those with sparse or fully bald areas, a new design must be created and agreed upon before the procedure.
During the Procedure
A local anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure.
In the process of FUT, Dr. Frank will first cut a strip in the back or side of the head to harvest hairs. These hair follicles will then be prepared for transplantation.
Hair follicles will be placed into the depleted areas of the scalp until the desired shape and thickness is achieved.
Depending on the scope of work discussed, an FUT hair transplant procedure typically takes between 5-8 hours.
After the Procedure
After FUT transplant, patients are sent home in sutures & a cellophane bandage but most are comfortable to resume their normal activities within several hours.
Swelling & bruising is common in the first few days after these procedures, so self-care at home may include taking ibuprofen, using a spray saline solution, and gentle cleaning of the area.
Sutures are removed 14 days post-procedure. Results will be noticeable within the first few months, but full growth may take up to 12 months. In this time, patients of Dr. Frank will have several checkup appointments to monitor progress and discuss questions that may have come up.

Who are the best candidates for FUT?
Along with those who suffer from male pattern baldness, FUT is a good solution for those over the age of 25. This is because hair loss patterns aren’t as predictable as those under this age.
Other good candidates for FUT hair transplant are those with a high hair follicle density, as it allows for less noticeable transplants. If your hair color is similar to your skin color, this will also allow for a less noticeable transplant.
What does the FUT recovery process look like?
Sutures will be applied during the procedure, and will need to removed approx. 2 weeks afterward.
In the days following a hair transplant, your donor & implant areas may experience minor scabbing, oozing, and/or swelling. It is essential to follow a regular care routine to
New hair growth will be seen in a few months, while the new hairs will reach full maturity in 12-18 months.
Are there any risks or side effects of FUT procedures?
It is very uncommon that FUT patients experience any side effects.
Inflammation of the hair follicles (folliculitis), swelling, mild bleeding, and/or soreness are occasionally seen, but typically resolve within a few days.
How much does FUT transplant cost?
FUT hair transplant ranges in cost, depending on the cause and extremity of the hair loss. Typically, scalp transplants by Dr. John Frank are between $10,000-$15,000.
What is the difference between FUT and FUE transplants?
In short, FUT removes a strip of donor hair for transplant – but with FUE, hairs are removed from the scalp one individual at a time. Learn more about the differences between FUE and FUT here.
How soon can I return to work after a FUT procedure?
There are several factors to consider when deciding to return to work.
Depending on what they do for a living and how extensive their procedure will be, some clients choose to return to work the next day while others may wait up to a week.
Our team is happy to consult with you on the best action plan for returning to work.
Will FUT transplant leave a scar?
FUT transplant offers very natural-looking results, and while there will be a scar at the site of the surgery, it should fade over time.
Due to the location of most donor areas, an FUT scar can easily be hidden over longer hair.
