Androgenic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss. More commonly known as male or female pattern baldness, it’s an affliction that creates receding hairlines as well as bald spots in men and hair thinning in women. It affects approximately 1 in every 3 people in the United States… with millions of more men affected than women. That said, the risk remains high regardless. Beyond physically losing one’s hair, androgenic alopecia can often cause people to suffer from lowered confidence, depression, and impact one’s overall quality of life.

So, what is it that precipitates androgenic alopecia and what can we do to fight against it?

What Triggers Androgenic Alopecia?

While there is still much we do not know about the exact causes of androgenic alopecia, there has been a suspected link between male pattern baldness and both coronary heart disease and prostate cancer in men – as well as female pattern baldness to polycystic ovary syndrome. This link is still actively being researched.

Androgens in the body are also a factor. These hormones are important in hair growth as they stimulate the hair follicles. However, over-stimulation of the hair follicles can lead to a shorter growth period for your hair which leads to shorter, thinner hairs being grown.

There are believed to be a number of other genetic and environmental factors that play a role in triggering androgenic alopecia. But, as of now, the evidence is inconclusive as to exactly what those factors are.

Can Androgenic Alopecia Be Reversed?

Unfortunately, as it stands now, there is no outright cure for androgenic alopecia. That said, there are a number of treatments that could be administered with the potential of some positive results.

There are topical treatments utilizing a drug called Minoxidil (which promotes more hair regrowth) or oral treatments using the drug Finasteride (which blocks male hormones that potentially trigger male pattern baldness). The effectiveness of these treatments have varying results for their clients.

Other forms of treatment exist, including low-level laser therapy and a couple of injectable treatments utilizing plasma or stem cell derived exosomes. Hair transplant procedures are also popular as they are often the only option to jumpstart hair regrowth after permanent hair loss in regions of the scalp due to male pattern baldness.

A multi-faceted approach to hair restoration could be needed to get your hair back to where you’d feel the most comfortable and confident.
