We all understand at this point that there is a correlation between age and hair loss. The older we get, the more likely we are to experience it. Some men experience the start of balding as early as their late teens and early twenties… with about half of all men experiencing some level of balding by the time they reach fifty.

While getting older is certainly a factor, we can correlate this to how our hormone levels change with age. One of those hormones that has been tied to hair health is dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT. So, what is DHT?

What Causes DHT To Increase?

To understand what causes DHT to increase, we must first understand what DHT is. This is an androgen, also known as a sex hormone, that is responsible for helping to develop male sex characteristics including facial and body hair. It is an important hormone that we do need for our bodies to function properly.

DHT can increase in the body through multiple avenues. Some of the ways that you can increase DHT is through proper exercise, getting enough sleep, and eating foods high in zinc and healthy fats. It is possible, however, to have excessive amounts of DHT in your body.

What Happens If Your DHT Levels Are Too High?

Unfortunately, high levels of DHT have been connected to hair loss. Excessive levels of DHT in your body can not only cause your hair follicles to shrink but can also extend the resting phase of your hair cycle – resulting in hair thinning and loss.

The dangers of excessively high levels of DHT do not end at your hair. Other problems related to high DHT levels include enlarged prostate, higher risk of prostate cancer, your body taking longer to heal from injury, and even coronary heart disease.

Can You Remove DHT From Your Scalp?

Directly removing DHT from your scalp isn’t feasible. However, DHT blockers or inhibitors can be useful.

Oral minoxidil (the generic Rogaine) helps to open blood vessels to allow better circulation and promote hair health. However, studies have shown the positive results are often temporary and that Minoxidil is not for everyone. You should consult with your doctor before considering Minoxidil.

Additionally, we have 2.5% topical Finasteride compound that we make especially for our clients for treating DHT. We also create individual, unique formulas to meet our clients’ specific needs. Oral Propecia is another non-surgical treatment we offer in these cases.

We Can Work With You On The Best Approach To Restoring Your Hair

While high levels of DHT are associated with earlier onset male pattern baldness, lowering levels of DHT and keeping them at a lower (but still healthy) level will only delay genetically predisposed baldness for so long. That does not mean baldness has to be a certainty. Our dedicated hair restoration professionals can give you a proper evaluation, narrow down the root causes of your hair loss, and work with you on the best approach to restoring your hair and your confidence.
