Hair loss is natural and something many people will experience in their lifetimes.

In many cases, hair loss is a reflection of age and/or genetics. But did you know that thinning hair and hair loss can also be a symptom of health-related issues?

How Health Contributes to Hair Loss

There are several ways that health can affect hair loss, including fevers, infections, hormone changes, and medications.

Recently, scientists have discovered that there is a specific protein (5a-reductase) that has a direct relationship to hair loss. Excess amounts of this protein can increase levels of the DHT molecule (a hormone made from testosterone), leading the hair follicle to shrink and stop producing new hair.

As more 5a-reductase is produced, the hair loss becomes greater.

Conditions & Illnesses That Can Cause Hair Loss

Although the specific triggers that increase 5a-reductase production are not yet known to scientists, several viruses & diseases have been found to carry the genetic code that links to hair loss. These include:

Pregnancy

Hypogonadism

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Diabetes

Thyroid Disease

Covid-19

Epstein-Barr Virus

Lupus

Alopecia areata

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)

Hashimoto’s Disease

Grave’s Disease

Syphilis

NOTE: Although these conditions have been linked to potential hair loss, it is still most common for hair loss to be hereditary.
